When I solve difficult math problems or learn new skills, I try to depict the problem. That makes it easier for me to solve the problem. Depicting the problem is an effective problem solving strategy in math and in many other subject areas.
Hello everyone. Today, I thought I would provide a poster on dividing algebraic exponents. It is difficult enough to divide regular/numerical exponents. It can be extra difficult to divide algebraic exponents, because the values are unknown. So, I created a poster that depicts dividing algebraic exponents and how to solve the division problems. I hope this makes it a little easier for you.

Hello everyone. When I was in school, some people had difficulty with the order of operations in math. However, I didn’t mind it too much. My math teacher taught us the order of operations by remembering the acronym, “PEMDAS.” PEMDAS stands for parentheses, exponents, multiplication (and) division, addition (and) subtraction. So, if you find an equation such as the one on the poster, you can remember PEMDAS to solve it. I have also seen other ways to remember the order of operations. Which way were you taught to remember the order of operations? Please, comment below. Thank you. Hello everyone! August is almost here. That means educators and students will be preparing for school soon. So, I decided that I would start creating some binder covers. I hope to have some to give away and some to sell. Please check the binder cover page on DUO Education often. If you have a specific subject, topic, or theme you would like on a binder cover, please feel free to comment below or contact me. Binder covers are great for classroom teachers, homeschoolers, and students of all ages. They can also be used for professional developments and trainings. Hello everyone. I decided to share with you one of my favorite math activities. It is a thinking activity. The idea is to count the squares. That sounds easy enough, right? Well, it may not be as easy as it sounds. This activity is not new. I have seen it with fewer squares. Yet, I have never seen it with this many. So, I created this particular learning page. I think this activity is fun anyway. However, in order to make it even more fun, I am going to make a contest out of it. If you would like a chance to win ONE HOUR of ONLINE TUTORING and/or one of my educational children's books for FREE, then correctly tell me how many of squares and send me a link of where you are sharing the link to my online tutoring services. Good luck! I will choose a name from all eligible entries, which are those who contain the correct number of squares and a link to where you have shared my tutoring page, on June 1st. You will be able to choose which prize you would like. Hi everyone! Today I am featuring a word search. This one is a rhyming word search. There are many "make your own word search" programs out there. I did this one using Microsoft Word and Photoshop. I also put a prompt to write a sentence using one of the set of rhyming words at the bottom. I think word searches are fun teaching tools to help with reading and spelling. Word recognition and recognizing the correct spelling of a word are helpful reading skills. Feel free to use this one. Also, if you have any ideas or requests for any other word searches, please feel free to comment or contact me. Thank you! Giveaway Contest Everyone likes a chance for a free book, right? Do you know the name of the waterfall pictured here? Do you know where in the world is Clarinda Cloud? If so, comment your answer for a chance to win the book. I will give you a hint. It is in my home state of Vermont! If you don't know.... that is okay. Please comment your suggestion of an elementary school, library, daycare, or children's counselor where I should donate the book if nobody guesses the correct answer. (U.S. addresses only at this time, please.) A free "Clarinda Cloud Activity Book" will be given away at the beginning of next month either way. Thank you! Please Explore the Site I just want to remind everyone that it is a good idea to explore the site on a regular basis. I try to add things often. There is much more to this site than the blog. (Although, I try to make the DUO Education Learning Blog fun and informative as well.) Speaking of adding things regularly, I am thinking about making the picture to the left DUO Education's new logo. What do you think? Anyway, there are many helpful pages on DUO Education. Do you or do you know anyone who needs help in math, reading, writing, or study skills? DUO Education offers online tutoring services. It is affordable, individualized, and friendly. How about having an author or illustrator guest speak in your class or library with The Storyteller's Tale Webinar series via the internet? I also have pages with books, activities, and posters that I have created. And... don't forget the game room, where you can play non-violent, educational and strategic games. I constantly try to make DUO Education: new, fun, appealing, educational, insightful, inspiring, and different. I try to make it a community of learning. Please, let me be a resource for you... and if there is anything you want to share, promote, ask, or whatever... please feel free to contact me. Hi everyone! I am excited to promote a wonderful way to practice math and to hone skills! Please welcome Emily, from the National Math Bee. First of all, I'd like to Thank Jodi for having us on her blog! We are excited to resume the National Math Bee(NMB) math game and tournament for the 2013/2014 school year. NMB is a simulated baseball game online, which pitches problems at the player to help students achieve extraordinary levels of speed and accuracy with their math skills. The game allows students to practice and master essential mathematic skill and prepares them for a higher level of thinking and problem solving. Scientific research has shown, without exception, every student group who used the software demonstrated a significant increase in their math skills. But don't just take our word for it!!! This year the NMB is FREE to all, so we hope you don't miss this opportunity! You can register your school and students here at NATIONAL MATH BEE REGISTRATION. Once your team is registered, students create their own avatar, and begin practicing math skills in an animated baseball game format. From September to December students will complete in classroom tournaments. Rankings, statistics and winners can be printed out and shared with the school. From January through April, students compete in school wide tournaments. Don’t miss out on the chance to help your students to improve their mathematical skills with this fun, exciting and interactive game. If you have any questions please feel free to CONTACT US using our website. You can also follow us on FACEBOOK or TWITTER to stay up to date with interesting articles and information about the upcoming tournament! We hope to see your team gaining points and improving math skills starting in September! Thanks again! Buzz *Note: I have been meeting many people and resources for education! DUO Education's network is getting bigger. There is another great resource linked on my side bar. It is an educational book by Ali Dent called The LITClub. We may be seeing Ali post here in the near future. I am sorry that I did not get the blog post out on time today. I have had a hectic week and was doing it at the last minute. Then, of course, I ran into some technical difficulties. So, my original post along with this one, will be on the feed on Thursday instead of Wednesday. Not only that.... my original post was not a "normal" post. I generally do not post anything that isn't at least in part education-related. However, today, I did post about my Liebster Award nomination and my nomination of others. I hope you didn't mind the slight side-track from normal blogging. I would also like to take this time to offer a hodge-podge of notes, since this week is not like most weeks. I do have quite a few snippets of things to post. Notes: I am excited to say that the "Clarinda Cloud Activity Book" is due to be released soon! I ordered the proof today! I can't wait to get it in my hands! That is one of the most rewarding moments of writing/creating... holding the finished product in your hands for the first time! Anyway, "Clarinda Cloud Activity Book" is based upon my picture book, "Clarinda Cloud." However, the activity book can stand alone. It can be used with or without the picture book. It addresses basic skills for ages 2-6 such as: coloring, tracing, letter finding, color recognition, drawing, counting, mazes, etc. It also, like the "Clarinda Cloud" book stresses the concepts of colors and feelings. I am still looking to build a network of people interested in education. I am thinking about adding a puzzle, math problem, or brainteaser of some sort at the end of each blog post...something to get thoughts and comments. What do you think? Do you have any other suggestions? Please tell the schools, teachers, childcare providers, parents, grandparents, and librarians in your life about this site! I would appreciate it greatly! I want to help! Also, I would love input from the people who may benefit from it the most and who may have some valued resources and input of their own! Don't forget the importance of summertime learning, please! Whether you provide your children or grandchildren with educational activities at home, sign them up for a summer program at school, go to a library or museum, or sign up for individualized tutoring here... it is so important! DUO Education currently offers online tutoring in math, reading, writing, and study skills. I want to thank all the authors and illustrators who are still connecting with me and showing interest in the Storyteller's Tale webinar series. I am gathering a list of authors and illustrators now. I hope to begin these in the fall once the next school year gets going. So, please let your local schools, teachers, and librarians know about this wonderful service! Imagine: authors and illustrators from around the country and beyond "visiting" your school or library via the Internet. It would be just as if they were their in person...only online. A great learning experience and a wonderful way to interact with these talented authors and illustrators! I hope to be adding some polls/questions to generate more response and input as well. I hope to hear from you! - See more at: http://www.micropoll.com/a/saveMicroPoll.do#sthash.FIB2Bayl.dpuf |
