Treasure Hunt to Find, Identify, and Draw Objects that are Various Colors

5/21/2014

Picture
Hello everyone.  As I sat thinking about a topic for my blog today, the beautiful day outside was calling my name.  So, I thought, “why not write about a lesson outside?”  Well, to be honest this activity can be done anywhere, inside or out.
The idea is to get young children to notice and identify things that are various colors.  It is like a treasure hunt.  And, who doesn’t like a treasure hunt.  And, if it is a beautiful day, like today is for me, I propose you take the activity outside.
This lesson can be done in a variety of ways.  You could have a clipboard and pencil for each child.  Then, have the children draw the things that they see in the correct spaces.  Or, you could all just go for a walk around the schoolyard, or house, or town; whatever is safe and realistic to do.  While you are walking, have children point out the different things that are the various colors on the chart.
If you can’t make it outside, don’t fret.  This activity can be done anywhere.  Give each child the recording chart and have him or her look around the school, the room, or the house to find, identify, and draw the various objects that fit into the chart.  Another possibility would be to give each child a book and have him or her flip through the book to notice objects that are the various colors from the chart.
When the children are finished drawing each item, help them label the objects.  If they are to the point where they know most of the letters and letter sounds ask them to try labeling their own objects.  If not, then, dot the word for each object so they can trace the letters in the word.  Don’t forget to have them color the objects!

How Many Squares and Share for a Chance to Win Contest

5/14/2014

Picture
Hello everyone.  I decided to share with you one of my favorite math activities.  It is a thinking activity.
The idea is to count the squares.  That sounds easy enough, right?  Well, it may not be as easy as it sounds.
This activity is not new.  I have seen it with fewer squares.  Yet, I have never seen it with this many.  So, I created this particular learning page.
I think this activity is fun anyway.  However, in order to make it even more fun, I am going to make a contest out of it. If you would like a chance to win ONE HOUR of ONLINE TUTORING and/or one of my educational children's books for FREE, then correctly tell me how many of squares and send me a link of where you are sharing the link to my online tutoring services.  Good luck!  I will choose a name from all eligible entries, which are those who contain the correct number of squares and a link to where you have shared my tutoring page, on June 1st.  You will be able to choose which prize you would like.

Basic Shapes Learning Sheet for Developing Creativity and Fine Motor Skills

Picture
Hello everyone.  You may have noticed that I have not blogged in a couple of weeks.  Life has thrown me for a loop.  However, I am back.  I may have to change things around a little and prioritize the use of my time a little more.  Yet, I will tell you more, as I know more.
I am applying for some teaching positions in the lower grades.  One is for a preschool teaching position.  So, I thought that it would be fun to include some preschool and kindergarten learning pages.
Today, I am sharing an activity page on basic shapes.  I think there is so much that you can do with basic shapes.  Here is an activity page that makes a car from basic shapes.  Children can color the page.  They can count the number of various shapes.  Also, it may be fun to give children some shapes and see if he or she can copy the design with the given shapes.  If you want to get more creative, give children shapes and have them design their own cars with the shapes.
This is a great way to teach shapes, creativity, and fine motor skills.  I know I used to enjoy creating things with shapes.  Well, sometimes I still enjoy creating things with shapes.  LOL!  Enjoy!

Please, check out more of the activity/learning sheets at DUO Education on the "Sample Educational Activity Sheets" page.

Synonyms Learning Sheet

Hello everyone.  Today, I am featuring synonyms.  I have a learning sheet on synonyms.  You may call it an activity sheet or a work sheet.
Synonyms are helpful in many ways.  Studying synonyms can help broaden vocabulary.  It can also help writers put a variety in their writing.  Synonyms help create more meaningful and specific descriptions.
This learning sheet is matching the synonyms by placing the synonym of the word given on the line beside it.  A word bank provides the words to use to fill in the blanks.

Nouns, Coloring, Reading, and Hidden Images

Hello everyone!  I have created a learning sheet for identifying and naming nouns.  It is a great activity for reading practice, identifying nouns, and coloring.
Many young children like to color in the various spaces in order to discover the hidden image.  It is also a great way to introduce stained glass activities in art class.  Cross curricular activities are said to pique the interest and reach more children.
Sometimes the success or dismissal of an activity lies in the way it is presented!
Please let me know how you like this sort of learning activity.  To me, it is one of the most difficult to create.  However, I am happy to do it, if there is a call for it!  Thank you!

Tracing is a Great Fine Motor Skill Activity

2/12/2014

Hello everyone.  Don't under estimate the power of tracing!  Tracing has many benefits.  Mainly, it is a great fine motor skill activity.  It helps children focus on the path in which they should take with their pencil.  Tracing guides them in their drawing or writing.
I have heard where people try to make tracing even more fun, by calling the dots train tracks.  They tell children to pretend that they are the train conductor, their pencil is the train, and they have to follow the train tracks.  It comes back to what I always say, "Learning should be fun."
I can remember tracing things even past the stage of learning fine motor skills.  I enjoyed getting tracing paper and tracing images that were past my drawing skill level.  It helped me to develop the "feel" for how to draw something.  It was a confidence booster, kind of like training wheels, for the skill of drawing.

Water Cycle Word Search and Word Searches as Teaching Tools

1/22/2014

Picture
Hello everyone!  A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned that I was starting to work on units and themes.  I shared a poster I created on the water cycle.  If you haven't read it yet, please feel free to do so here.
Today, to add to the water cycle fun, I thought I would share a word search I created using words and concepts often discussed while studying the water cycle.
Some people may feel that word searches are "filler activities."  You know what I mean.  It is one of those activities when you want to keep the students busy and out of trouble when a substitute is there.  It is one of those activities where you don't expect the substitute teacher to do any "real" teaching.  And, if you give a word search to the students and say, "Here, complete this word search," that may be what it is… just a filler activity.
Yet, I think word searches can be great teaching tools.  As a matter of fact, I think they can reinforce reading skills, spellings skills, and knowledge in various content areas.  Word searches helps people focus on the spelling of a particular word, because they are looking at the word and often checking and double checking the word while searching for it.  They have to often read it and reread it while looking for the word.  Not only that, but,  if you talk about the words on the page…or ask students to write the words on the page in a sentence as another activity… it reinforces the content knowledge as well.
So, I guess, as in many other things in life, it is all in how you approach it.  To me, learning should be fun.  It should be something that people want to do, instead of something force upon them.  Finding fun and creative ways of teaching, such as in the use of a word search is a wonderful way to motivate and encourage students to learn.

Fun & Friendly Dinosaur Assignment

1/15/2014

Picture
Hello everyone!  When I was thinking about today's blog topic, I had thoughts of my kindergarten teaching days.  Of course, that gave me a wonderful idea for a blog post.
When I was teaching kindergarten, I did a unit on dinosaurs.  All of us kindergarten teachers in the school did the same units at the same time, but sometimes put our own spin on it.  The students enjoyed this unit.  I don't know if I have ever seen a kindergarten student who didn't like the dinosaur unit.  LOL!
I don't remember, but I think we did this unit at about the same time that "Earth Day" came about.  So, we also talked about recycling and re-using things.  Anyway, as a culminating activity to the unit, the students would be asked to create a dinosaur out of regular household items and/or craft trinkets; such as pompoms, pipe cleaners, and the like.  They weren't to spend very much, if anything, to create the dinosaur.
It was okay for parents to spend some quality time with their children and help with this project.  It was even encouraged, as long as they were helping and not doing it all.
Children had to create a dinosaur, name it, write about it…what it did, what it ate, where it lived, etc.  Also, in class, we had a big show and tell, where students told about their dinosaurs.  It was fun!  Then, we put them on display for teachers, students, and parents to admire.

Picture
Okay… here is your "Fun & Friendly Assignment," if you so choose to use it.  Give a child the activity as described above.  Have him or her create a dinosaur using things commonly found around the house… food, containers, tidbits of craft supplies, etc. This can be a formal assignment at school or homeschool, as well as a fun activity to do at home.  It is also great for daycares and preschools.  You can help, but please don't do it.  Let the child use his or her imagination, not yours.  When you are finished, take a photo of the child's masterpiece, and email it to duo_dynamics@yahoo.com as an attachment.  In the subject line, put the title of this post. (I will not spell it out here, but you will find it at the top of the page.)  Emailing the photo gives me permission to post it on my website.  If you want a name or age posted with the picture, please include that as well.  Usually, I like to use like first name, age, and maybe the state where the child is from.  But… nothing revealing.  If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me.
     Have fun with this!

The "S" Stocking Activity

12/11/2013

Picture
Hi everyone!  How are you today?  I thought I would include an activity that I used to do with my kindergarten class about this time of year.  It is a great activity to practice beginning sound for kindergarten and preschool classes.
Back then, I used a template that was drawn by someone else.  This is a stocking that I drew.  (LOL!  I hope it looks like a stocking.)
The activity is simple.  You ask children to fill the stocking with things that start with "s."  That means they will draw things that start with "s" all over the stocking.
At this point in the year, my students were usually just starting to put letters and sounds together to write their own words.  So, often I would have them try to label their drawings as well.  For some of them, the labeling would just include making an "s" next to the object.  For others, I would expect them to write down as many of the sounds in the word as they could.
I usually made a big deal out of this activity.  It came at a perfect time to use it for some informal assessments.  I would have the students color the items they drew as well as the stockings.  Then, we would all get in a circle on the floor in order to share our drawings.  Yes, I did one too!  I also displayed them all on the wall or bulletin board.
I was able to assess things such as: the letter and sound correspondence, the ability to hear sounds in a word and write them down, fine motor skills, and speaking in a group.
Depending on your setting (home, public school, private school, etc.) and your limitations.  You could also use this activity as the beginning to a talk about the tradition of hanging stockings at Christmas time.  Or, you could ask children if there is anything in their stocking that they would like for Christmas.

Notes and Announcements

Picture
Yes, first of all, I would like to say that I am gearing up for some exciting things in 2014.  I would like to do what I can to bring more traffic to the site, get more interaction, and supply more educational information, services, activities, etc.  My hope is to build a nice community or even "family" of educators and learners.  If you have any ideas, I would love to hear them.  Feel free to comment here or contact me.
Secondly, my ebooks are going to be free on Kindle on December 17th and 18th.  It would be a great time to check them out and perhaps even give a review!  Please check out "Clarinda Cloud" and "Johnny's Adventure Makes Reading Fun" on Amazon.com.  Taking advantage of an ebook giveaway is a great way to pick up new books, decide whether you would like to have a book in softcover, or write a review for an author.  I am not a big fan of ebooks for children.  However, they do make it easier to bring along your child's favorite books for vacations, trips to the movies, shopping trips, etc.  If you have any questions or comments about my books, or ideas for me to use in future books, that you would like to share with me, please feel free to contact me.
Speaking of book giveaways, I am going to be co-hosting (with author/illustrator Virginia Wright) and participating in a Facebook event called, "2nd Annual Author Christmas Giveaway," on December 17th.  Various authors are going to be getting together online to give away their books either in ebook form or softcover form.  If you are on Facebook, please feel free to stop by.  You are all welcome!  It is a great way to chat with authors online!
Also, please remember that I am having a book giveaway contest for "Clarinda Cloud" for the month of December.  Really, I am looking for feedback on my sites and interaction.  However, I am happy to giveaway a book in the process.  It is a win/win for both of us, right? Please follow the links for the blog posts on these sites for more information and to comment.  I look forward to hearing from you.  Thank you!

Rhyming Word Search, Giveaway Contest, and More

11/13/2013

Picture
Hi everyone!  Today I am featuring a word search.  This one is a rhyming word search.  There are many "make your own word search" programs out there.  I did this one using Microsoft Word and Photoshop.  I also put a prompt to write a sentence using one of the set of rhyming words at the bottom.
I think word searches are fun teaching tools to help with reading and spelling.  Word recognition and recognizing the correct spelling of a word are helpful reading skills.
Feel free to use this one.  Also, if you have any ideas or requests for any other word searches, please feel free to comment or contact me.  Thank you!

Giveaway Contest

Picture
Everyone likes a chance for a free book, right?  Do you know the name of the waterfall pictured here?  Do you know where in the world is Clarinda Cloud?  If so, comment your answer for a chance to win the book.  I will give you a hint.  It is in my home state of Vermont!  If you don't know.... that is okay.  Please comment your suggestion of an elementary school, library, daycare, or children's counselor where I should donate the book if nobody guesses the correct answer.  (U.S. addresses only at this time, please.)  A free "Clarinda Cloud Activity Book" will be given away at the beginning of next month either way.  Thank you!

Please Explore the Site

Picture
I just want to remind everyone that it is a good idea to explore the site on a regular basis.  I try to add things often.  There is much more to this site than the blog.  (Although, I try to make the DUO Education Learning Blog fun and informative as well.)
Speaking of adding things regularly, I am thinking about making the picture to the left DUO Education's new logo.  What do you think?
Anyway, there are many helpful pages on DUO Education.  Do you or do you know anyone who needs help in math, reading, writing, or study skills?  DUO Education offers online tutoring services.  It is affordable, individualized, and friendly.  How about having an author or illustrator guest speak in your class or library with The Storyteller's Tale Webinar series via the internet?  I also have pages with books, activities, and posters that I have created.  And... don't forget the game room, where you can play non-violent, educational and strategic games.
I constantly try to make DUO Education:  new, fun, appealing, educational, insightful, inspiring, and different.  I try to make it a community of learning.  Please, let me be a resource for you... and if there is anything you want to share, promote, ask, or whatever... please feel free to contact me.
