Order of Operations Poster and Explanation

8/20/2014

Picture
Hello everyone.  When I was in school, some people had difficulty with the order of operations in math.  However, I didn’t mind it too much.  My math teacher taught us the order of operations by remembering the acronym, “PEMDAS.”
PEMDAS stands for parentheses, exponents, multiplication (and) division, addition (and) subtraction.  So, if you find an equation such as the one on the poster, you can remember PEMDAS to solve it.
I have also seen other ways to remember the order of operations.  Which way were you taught to remember the order of operations?  Please, comment below.  Thank you.

DUO Education Presents Clarinda Cloud Name Tags

8/6/2014

Picture
Hello everyone.  It is getting close to the beginning of school.  So, I created name tags.  Clarinda Cloud has her name tag.  She is ready for school.
This is perfect for all the elementary teachers and guidance counselors out there as well as preschool teachers and daycare providers.
However, this is not just a regular name tag.  If you have read the book, "Clarinda Cloud," you can also ask children to point to the cloud that shows how they are feeling at any particular moment in the day.  It is a great way for a student to be able to show you that he or she is happy, angry, scared, shy, sorry, sad…etc… through out the day in an inconspicuous way.
Never heard of Clarinda Cloud or her books?  That is okay.  You can find out more information on her website at www.ClarindaCloud.com.
Want to buy one or both of the Clarinda Cloud books?

Book Report Organization Questions for Beginning Writers

7/23/2014

Picture
Hello everyone.  I thought I would create some "Book Report Organization Questions" to share.  This is a great way to have children organize their thoughts before writing a book report.  In some instances, you may also want to use these questions as the book report.
These questions are also great for gathering thoughts for a book review.  Questions like the one asking students to recall a detail from the beginning and whether the beginning hooked him or her into the story or not, go beyond just the "normal" book report.  This resource begins to address a higher order thinking instead of just recalling facts about a book.
Whether your student is working on book reports or book reviews, this is a wonderful resource for the beginning writer.  It can be adapted to any level.  You can even write in the answers dictated by a child too young to write his or her own answers.  So, whether you are a homeschooler or a classroom teacher, this resource would be great for you.
For your copy, click the image for your two page "Book Report Organization Questions."  (It is pictured here as one page only for ease of display purposes.)

Hello everyone!  I thought I would take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped make the "Share and Win Party" a success.  DUO Education got an all time high of over 2500 page views in one day during the promotion.  It was wonderful!
Please feel free to explore and share the pages of DUO Education frequently.  I update them quite often.  Also, this time, the prize was for a $10 Amazon gift card.  (The winner as been chosen and the gift card has been delivered.)  However, as DUO Education gets better known and more established, the prizes for my events will get bigger.
Plus, DUO Education boasts quality, individualized education!  This isn't a "do it my way" site.  It is an "I teach it the way you understand it" site!  And, if you need to understand how to do it a particular way, I can do that too!
So, please feel free to share the following pages and more:
*DUO Education
*Online Tutoring Services

*DUO Education Learning Blog
*Story Starters and Writing Prompts

*Storyteller's Tale Webinar
*Books by Jodi Desautels
There is so much to share from DUO Education!

There is yet another page coming to DUO Education!  Look for it tomorrow.  There will be a page that gives a fun fact, a word, a question, or a problem of the week.  This will come out in blog style every Thursday!  This page will be great for homeschoolers, classrooms, and lifelong learners!

DUO Education Shares Story of Lesson in Persistence for Finding Fractions Fonts

7/9/2014

Picture
Hello everyone.  I spent most of the morning trying to figure out how to create learning pages including fractions with numbers on top of each other.  If you type them in a Microsoft Word document, fractions came out like 1/2. However, that is not what I wanted.  I searched free for commercial use fraction fonts.  Yet, I couldn’t find any.  So, I decided to create fractions of my own.  I have just the beginning shown here.  I still have more to go.  When I am finished, I will have a bank of fractions from which to choose.
I guess, sometimes it is just better to make it yourself.  Persistence helps as well.  There is a lesson to be learned in persistence!

Hello everyone!  Today, I thought I would share with you a summertime word search.  It is great for homeschoolers, adults, or anyone who just wants to do a word search.  The search words are twenty-five words that remind me of summer. Are there any other words that remind you of summer?
Feel free to click on the image to download it! Have fun!

I also want to tell you all about a wonderful contest that will be starting soon!  It is called the "share and win party."  The idea is that people will share things for a week to help spread the word about DUO Education and one person will be chosen to win a $10 Amazon gift card.  Oh, more information about this wonderful contest is on DUO Education's latest page, "New on DUO Education."

Exercise is Brain Food for Learning

6/25/2014

Hi everyone.  Are you or someone you know having difficulty learning facts for a test or quiz?  Do you study and study, but it doesn't seem to sink in?  Are you feeling sluggish and not up to studying much at all?
Try studying while exercising!  Studies have shown that this is an effective way to learn.  Or, if you are not great at multitasking, study just after you exercise.
Let's say that you want to learn and practice multiplication facts.  Some ways you can incorporate your learning with your exercise could be:

*Record the facts into a recorder and listen to them while walking
*Have someone quiz you while playing doing some free throws
*Bring interesting videos like the one on this blog post to watch while using an exercise bike
*Toss a ball/play catch with a friend or parent while they say multiplication fact and you echo them

Remember, exercise is brain food for learning!  If this still doesn't work, please feel free to contact me.  Some tutoring may turn out to be a useful tool!

To, Too, or Two?  When Do I Use Too?

6/18/2014

Picture
Hi everyone!  I have to admit that grammar is not one of my favorite subjects.  It never has been.  However, I have learned some cute little ways to remember grammar rules and usage throughout the years.  I continue to learn.
So, I thought grammar would be a great topic for today.  How do you know when to use the word "too?"  Do you know?  Even if you do, you might be surprised to hear how many people don't.
Think of "me too."  You want to do something or believe something as well.  You use "too" instead of the word "also."  It is like you are showing a togetherness.  "I want to play cards and watch a movie too."  You want to do both of those things.  It is almost like playing cards and watching movie go together.  "I want to go shopping too."  You want to go shopping as well, or even with someone.  It is a togetherness with someone or a camaraderie of sorts.  It is like the old saying, "They go TOGETHER like two peas in a pod."  Well, think of the "oo" in "too" as the two peas in a pod to remember that "too" is used to show togetherness.
I hope this helps.  Let me know what you think.
