Now, it is your time. Pretend that it is raining outside, you turn on the television but nothing good is on, and the pains of boredom start setting in. Tell your story. What happens from here? Does the day continue to be boring? Does it turn into something exciting and unexpected? How? Why?
Hello everyone. It is raining here today. I looked out the window and the rain was pouring down. Okay…not pouring down, but coming down. I decided to not go out and do what I had planned for today. So, that is what gave me the idea for today's writing assignment. I admit, I hope that it is not a boring day. However, there have been times when days like this have turned out to be boring.

Hello everyone! I think today's story starter is based upon something that we all have experienced at one time or another. Have you ever woke up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat? Have you ever been jolted out of a nice sleep? That is how today's story starter starts today. There are many reasons that could wake us up with a jolt. Today's story starter leaves that detail up to you. And, things that happen while we are sleeping, sometimes tells quite a bit about us. So, that makes today's story starter even more exciting. The reason why the character is woke up so startled, could foreshadow somethings about the plot or about the character his or herself. I can't wait to see your results of this story starter. Please, feel free to share it with me. Hello everyone. Today's writing prompt is a list of fears. Most of us have fears in one way or another. It could be fear of public speaking, fear of snakes, fear of closed in spaces, fear of spiders, fear of heights, fear of death…any sort of fear. Some people have multiple fears. Fear is a strong emotion and is often used to build up to climactic moments and pivotal points in the plot. It is a good idea to brainstorm with a list of fears. And, if they are your fears, you may be more apt to make the scene more emotional. Sometimes it is nice to be able to put yourself in the shoes of your characters. Hello everyone! All of us have had a first day of school. Some of us went happily and others not so happily. Either way, there was so much to take in. It makes a perfect event to describe. If you can't remember the first day of preschool or kindergarten, you can always describe the first day of high school or the first day of college. If you are a homeschooler, you could write about the first day of getting together with other homeschoolers. I enjoyed my first day of school! I don't remember all the details. However, I do remember that I had been waiting for months to be able to finally go to school. My husband tells me that his first day of school was not so fun. What about you? What was your first day of school like? Hello everyone! For me, today's story starter elicits quite a few different memories. Door slamming might bring to mind many memories for you as well. Or, it could give you a brilliant idea for a story. There are many things you can do with this beginning. One way to have a strong beginning to a story is to have a very emotional and descriptive opening to a story. The sound and the tears already has people wondering what it means and what will happen. It piques the interest of the senses. So… have fun with it. And, if you try it, I am happy to see any of your results. Hello everyone! Here is writing prompt number two in the series for 2014. Yes, it is another list. I promise, they won't all be lists. There will be times when you can dig deep into the art of writing. However, some people like to make lists and find it to be a wonderful way to stay organized. Also, I think that it is easier, when you can't think of anything to write about to be able to refer back to a list of possible ideas. There are a few reasons why I chose emotions as the topic of today's writing prompt. Some of you may know that I wrote a children's book where the identifying and sharing of feelings is encouraged called, "Clarinda Cloud." I think identifying and sharing feelings in a healthy way is very important. Also, stories that include feelings are some of the most inspirational and breath-taking writing out there. People can relate to feelings, because we all have them. Something scary may have us on the edge of our seats. Something sad, may have us choking back tears. If well written, we can feel the feelings of the characters in the story. To make a list, may help us to think about what makes us feel a certain way. If we feel that way, then possibly our character can feel that way and our readers mY feel that way. In this writing prompt, I said to only choose one emotion in which to explore and about which to make a list. However, I encourage you to do it with many emotions. It is a great prewriting exercise! If you use this writing prompt, I look forward to hearing about the results. |
