Many children's stories feature animals. Maybe not as much, but they are found in MG, YA, and adult books as well. So, to bring to mind how you feel about animals may give you a great idea for a story. And, to me, that is the point of a writing prompt… to give you an idea when you are experiencing writer's block.
Hello everyone! Today's writing prompt is to list your favorite animal and why it is your favorite. It can be a specific animal, like maybe your dog, Rover. Or, it can be dogs in general…or whatever your favorite animal may be.

Hello everyone. Have you ever wanted to time travel back in history? Have you ever wanted to write a historical fiction novel? Here is a great exercise to help you do just that. The setting is 1945. You can choose where in the world the story is taking place. Some people may remember first hand, what it was like in 1945. Others of us have heard anecdotes from parents and grandparents, aunt or uncles. It was a difficult time for most people. But… hopefully, you can have fun setting yourself or your character back in that time. Hello everyone! Today's writing prompt is a strategy to help get through one of the most popular problems in writing. Often, when we write our topic is too broad. It is difficult to keep on task with our writing, because the topic is to broad. We get lost or overwhelmed and start writing off topic. I can remember writing in school and having teachers tell me to narrow my topic. Hopefully, this prompt will help you do that with your writing. So…choose a topic…say, "education" for example. And, write it at the top of your page. Then, write down as many narrower topics that you can think of that have to do with your broad topic. For example, for the broad topic of "education" you may write things like: special education, science, favorite teacher, how to study for a test, etc. Hello everyone! I think today's story starter is based upon something that we all have experienced at one time or another. Have you ever woke up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat? Have you ever been jolted out of a nice sleep? That is how today's story starter starts today. There are many reasons that could wake us up with a jolt. Today's story starter leaves that detail up to you. And, things that happen while we are sleeping, sometimes tells quite a bit about us. So, that makes today's story starter even more exciting. The reason why the character is woke up so startled, could foreshadow somethings about the plot or about the character his or herself. I can't wait to see your results of this story starter. Please, feel free to share it with me. Hello everyone. Today's writing prompt is a list of fears. Most of us have fears in one way or another. It could be fear of public speaking, fear of snakes, fear of closed in spaces, fear of spiders, fear of heights, fear of death…any sort of fear. Some people have multiple fears. Fear is a strong emotion and is often used to build up to climactic moments and pivotal points in the plot. It is a good idea to brainstorm with a list of fears. And, if they are your fears, you may be more apt to make the scene more emotional. Sometimes it is nice to be able to put yourself in the shoes of your characters. Hello everyone! You guessed it! Today's story starter is based on a real life situation. And, if you have ever been stuck on some ice, when you are trying to get some where, you know the circumstance all too well. If you don't, imagine yourself through this one. It might be good to put yourself in someone else's shoes. This particular story starter was inspired by someone spending the night and trying to get to work the next day. The long driveway was fine coming in. But… with temperatures dropping, the ice set in and that was no fun! Hello everyone! All of us have had a first day of school. Some of us went happily and others not so happily. Either way, there was so much to take in. It makes a perfect event to describe. If you can't remember the first day of preschool or kindergarten, you can always describe the first day of high school or the first day of college. If you are a homeschooler, you could write about the first day of getting together with other homeschoolers. I enjoyed my first day of school! I don't remember all the details. However, I do remember that I had been waiting for months to be able to finally go to school. My husband tells me that his first day of school was not so fun. What about you? What was your first day of school like? Hello everyone. We have all had tests of one sort or another. Sometimes it is a quiz or exam at school. Other times it might be a test to get on a sport's team or in a club. It might be an aptitude test for a job or vocation. The way I wrote it, kind of leaves the exact nature of the test up in the air. In that way, you can do whatever you want with it. The only certainty is that the test is important. What are your thoughts? If you choose to use this writing prompt, I would enjoy seeing your results. Thank you! Hello everyone! I hope you have fun with today's writing prompt. I believe it takes skill to write a conversation. Sometimes it gets to be too monotonous with the "he said" and "she said." But if you don't think about it. If you just get the conversation out there. If you are thinking about a silly conversation, it might be easier to make the conversation more real. Enjoy! And, as usual, if you choose to use this writing prompt, I would enjoy seeing your results. Thank you. Hello everyone! For me, today's story starter elicits quite a few different memories. Door slamming might bring to mind many memories for you as well. Or, it could give you a brilliant idea for a story. There are many things you can do with this beginning. One way to have a strong beginning to a story is to have a very emotional and descriptive opening to a story. The sound and the tears already has people wondering what it means and what will happen. It piques the interest of the senses. So… have fun with it. And, if you try it, I am happy to see any of your results. |
